S.M.Y.L.I. 2011

Student's art

This summer, not only did we knock out another fine mini-doc about the Summer Youth Leadership program for Immigrant youth, which brings them onto a college campus, but I also trained a group of intrepid youth, college students from the same program, to conceive and shoot the doc. It was a great week.

There’s not much about SMYLI online but I can attest to the excellent program and programming and what an inspiration it is to me.

Along the way I’ve begun to dream a dream… in the same way my heroes in the days of old, Cesar Chavez, utilitzed the arts to embody, convey and teach a message, I see the Digital Arts being used for the cause, to educate, entertain and transform a group of people, to give them a voice…

This year I was able to present my vision to Colorado’s statewide Migrant Educator’s conference. Along with the “get2know” idea (read more here) – I shared a vision for making a genre film with this same group of youth living on the edge of the American Dream.
